Last Friday I wrote a blog post for Magnify Digital, a digital media company I am currently working with, on the human impact aspect of the abundance of online information, and thought it was appropriate to talk about it here as well!

Between work and my personal life I feel that one way or another I am constantly connected, and frankly sometimes I just want to be disconnected! The endless streams of Tweets, Facebook updates, Instagram posts, Pinterest pins, and Google+ comments has my brain working double time all day long. So I’ve decided for 2012 I am going to try to follow some rules that will help me filter through all the online fluff and be more effective in how I spend my time, and what I choose to read. Here are my 5 Tips on How to Filter Through the Online Fluff!

HAPPY MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY!

by Maryam on January 16, 2012

Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day! This day is observed every year on the third Monday of January, around the same time as his birthday January 15. It became a federal holiday in the USA on January 20, 1986.

Martin Luther King Jr. has remained an inspiration to all generations who have come before and after him. On August 28, 1963, approximately five years prior to his assassination, he gave his famous speech “I have a dream….” – his dream was  for racial equality and an end to discrimination. Let’s keep the dream alive and spread the word!

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. today, watch the movie Sing Your Song, about his friend, actor, entertainer, and activist Harry Belafonte – a true leader in the Civil Rights Movement. Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day!

On Wednesday February 23, 2011 wear something pink to symbolize that we as a society will not tolerate bullying anywhere!

This campaign has its roots set as far back as 2007, when two grade 12 students from a Nova Scotia highschool decided enough was enough when a fellow student got bullied for wearing pink. They started the “Sea of Pink” support group by going to a discount shop and buying 50 pink tank tops and shirts to wear to school the next day. [Read More…]

Hey Friends,

This post was originally posted on the GetConnectedMedia.com blog and thought I should share it here too!

We’re all on the hunt for a deal, which is why Groupon has rapidly become popular. Now there’s a similar service that alerts you about great non-profits that could use a little help.

Philanthroper follows the daily deal styling of Groupon but instead features one charity per day, allowing you to easily donate just one dollar if it appeals to you. Usually charities require a minimum of $10 or $20, which often discourages people from donating. [Read More…]

As I gear up for Christmas this year I can’t help but feel extremely grateful for my family and friends, and for having a roof under my head, food on the table, and warm clothes to sleep in at night. On Christmas day approximately 15,000 children will be homeless in Canada and 500,000 in the United States.

The Covenant House is an amazing organization to donate to and to get involved with if you want to help keep a child off the street this holiday season. [Read More…]

Sometimes in life when we receive something for free we tend to take it for granted, and don’t really take the time to appreciate the amount of energy, passion, and resources that was put into creating that service or product for our benefit. With the rapidly increasing use of the internet many websites have been existing and sustaining themselves over the years by volunteers, government grants, and donations in order to provide their community with information. Academy Awards time is always my favourite time of year because I LOVE playing the guessing game and making predictions about my top picks, plus it gives me an accuse to veg out and watch all the nominated movies before the big awards show. I even host an Annual Oscar Party every year and give each person who attends a ballot sheet so they can make their predictions, and the person with the highest number of correct “guesses” wins a grand prize at the end of the night! It’s lots of fun. [Read More…]
